Many have interpreted this phrase with different connotations. The one that resonates with me the most is to be in integrity with yourself. Be the person you truly want to show up as every day and be mindful of that. Don’t just KNOW you SHOULD be that person actually BE that person.
How I decided to name this blog based on Shakespeare
In writing my blog for this week I chose to focus on unconditional love for oneself. That is always first and foremost in life before anyone else should come into play in your life. If you do not truly love yourself you will bump up against every weakness and negative inner thoughts in your surrounding world until you do. As I started to write this blog on unconditional love I left the title blank. I was not sure what title would resonate with me most. As I began to type on my computer, my bracelet on my wrist began to clang against the computer keyboard annoying the heck out of me! I reached down to remove the bracelet when the words written on it hit me like a ton of bricks. “To thine own self be true”. That is it!!!! That is my title! Chills ran through my body and tears of joy welled up in my eyes as I remembered the story of how this bracelet came into my life. It was at that moment that I knew the purpose of the bracelet was to share this story to inspire myself and all of you reading this.
The Story Behind My Bracelet
As I began to expose myself to the world of Facebook through my Facebook live videos (scary as hell at first) I was private messaged by a friend of a friend after one video in particular about overcoming hardships in your life. For confidentiality purposes, lets name this person Lucy. After private messaging non-stop for hours, Lucy and I decided we had to chat on the phone. Once we began talking, our friendship was laid in stone. Within days, we realized we were encountering similar life struggles and even though we lived far apart, it felt as if we knew each other in a prior life. (hey – maybe we did!) As I struggled to find my voice and uncover my life purpose she sent me a surprise gift in the mail. I was so excited for this gift but I had NO clue what it was or why she sent it! Once I received it, I opened it up to find a silver bracelet with the words “To thine own self be true” on it. I have barely taken it off since she sent it as the gesture meant everything to me. But to be honest, I did not understand the magnitude of the meaning behind it – until today!
I realize now the meaning of this bracelet is everything. Nothing can fully work in your life unless you have unconditional love for yourself first and foremost. Without love for yourself we allow our own anxieties get in the way of the soul life we want most – peace and joy. The ONLY way to begin movement towards your soul life is to truly believe with every morsel of your being that YOU are unstoppable, strong, powerful, bulletproof, perfect just as you are, lovable, joyous, free and actually BE those characteristics without anything or anyone getting in the way. Its time to put your blinders on friends and live out your dharma (i.e., life purpose)!!!
What Holds Us Back
When we limit ourselves from what we want for our soul, we succumb to failure and ultimately become our own worst enemy. We hold ourselves back from becoming the whole person we are supposed to be because we LET our inner negative thoughts and fears hold us back. In essence, the ONLY person that can hold you back is YOU! YOU create your own reality. This is why personal development is necessary for everyone. The world only becomes your oyster when you love yourself unconditionally. If you are not at that place with yourself, you MUST do the hard work to truly get there. I have learned through my own struggles and strengths that there is never an end to working on loving and becoming the best version of YOU. It is a constant life journey to work on yourself as you continue to grow as a person, live out your true soul purpose and ultimately have unconditional love for yourself. Even the best of the best enlightened people continue to do the work on themselves as we are all human.
My Recent Epiphany
Throughout my childhood I had been told time and time again that I should smile more often. I always rolled my eyes and thought the person telling me that was trying to annoy me. Once I began my personal growth & spiritual journey a few years back, I realized I truly did not know what made me happy outside of my family and friends. It became my mission to find my passions and start living them not just dreaming of finding them SOME DAY. I kept asking anyone who would listen how I should go about finding my passions. Then finally – my passions one by one came to me when I surrendered, let go of thinking and began to feel with my soul. These passions were never in my radar – EVER! Yoga, writing, Leadership, Public Speaking, Inspiring and Motivating others, Spiritual Coaching. I realized that when you truly surrender and let your real self come out on its own, a whole new world may appear.
When was the last time you looked at your reflection in the mirror? Not just to brush your hair, brush your teeth, put on makeup or make sure there is nothing on your face. Have you looked in the mirror and felt grateful for your whole being? Have you accepted all of you in that reflection not just some of you? If not, its time to surrender and accept all of you. Truly allow yourself the space and time to go through a metamorphosis from a caterpillar into a butterfly. Tune out the noise around you. You have all the guidance you need within. Find your unconditional love.
Remember – TO Thine Own Self Be True.
Please share this blog with anyone you know as having self-love is a constant reminder for all of us.
With Love and Gratitude for all of you,
